Schinazi consists of a dynamic and complementary team with expertise spanning medicinal chemistry, virology, molecular biology, toxicology, pharmacology, immunology, and computational biology. The Schinazi lab focuses on discovering novel antiviral agents with the goal of advancing promising compounds to clinical trials. Over the years, the group has developed several small molecule inhibitors for the treatment of human viral infections including HIV, herpesviruses, hepatitis B and C, SARS-CoV-2 and work actively on drug targeting emerging human viruses including Dengue, West Nile, Yellow Fever, Chikungunya, Ebola, Norovirus and Enteroviruses.The lab employs over 70 people, including several research faculty, post-doctoral fellows, support scientists, research staff, administrative personnel and graduate students. The laboratory consists of approximately 3900 sq. ft. of lab space, with another 700 sq. ft. dedicated to administration. This includes BSL-2, BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories for research and training, four dedicated molecular biology labs, three cellular/molecular toxicology and pharmacological facilities, mass spectrometry, gene chip and flow cytometry facilities. In addition, LOBP has its own fully equipped chemistry laboratory with all the resources required to perform synthetic and medicinal chemistry including 400 MHz NMR with autosampler, UPLC/MS system, preparative HPLC, automated purification systems, and microwave synthesis reactor.LOBP is now seeking an Associate Scientist with synthetic/medicinal chemistry expertise and previous experience in nucleoside chemistry to join its chemistry group.The Associate Academic Research Scientist performs a wide range of highly technical and complex research duties and has documented scientific achievements and increasing technical, management, leadership, and professional expertise necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Demonstrated knowledge of research and experimental platforms for analyzing, design and interpreting results Investigates and recommends potential alternative approaches to improve the quality of results of basic and/or translational research.

Demonstrates increased responsibility through management of teams and leadership of scientific projects by applying advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development, as well as facilitating in some training aspects of other team members.

Aids in writing IACUC, IRB, Biosafety and other approval documents.

Oversees quality assurance of research conducted by other team members.

May assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of instrumentation or methodology development and user support.

With the approval of the responsible faculty director, may be principal investigators on funded proposals.

Performs other responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:The candidate will:

Be a skilled synthetic organic chemist with a consistent track record of design and synthesis of small molecules

Utilize synthetic organic chemistry expertise to design and execute novel multi-step synthesis of complex molecules of interest including nucleoside analogs and small molecules as potential antiviral agents

Be familiar with all the modern technics of purification and chemical characterization including NMR (1D & 2D), MS, HPLC

Independently analyze and interpret results of studies, review literature for related research projects, and compile findings.

Keep current with field of expertise including literature and technology development

Draft scientific papers and abstracts; attend meetings and regularly present scientific data.

Perform other lab related responsibilities and duties as required or assigned

Maintain a professional code of conduct and strict confidentiality in all work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD and one year of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.

Or master's degree and three years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.

Or bachelor's degree and five years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.

Laboratory experience should be based on area of assignment.

Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Minimum qualification: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc.) in organic chemistry.Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.NOTE: Position tasks are required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location; working remote is not an option.
